GES Announces Merit-Based SHS/TVET Placement 2025

By | August 27, 2025

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a new merit-based system for SHS/TVET placement in 2025. This means that placement into Senior High Schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions will now strictly follow academic performance and merit, rather than any other considerations. The updated placement policy is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity for all BECE 2025 candidates across Ghana, commencing on September 17, 2025..

Under this new directive, students who perform better in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will have higher priority in gaining admission to their preferred SHS or TVET schools. This marks a major shift in the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), aligning with the government’s vision to strengthen education quality and access.

What Does Merit-Based Placement Mean?

Under the new GES placement guidelines, candidates who perform better in the BECE 2025 will have higher priority in securing admission to their preferred SHS or TVET schools.

  • Top-performing students will be placed first.
  • Placements will be done based on raw scores and merit rather than external factors.
  • The process ensures that students earn their placement through effort and performance.

GES merit-based placement Key Details and New Guidelines

  • Merit-Based Placement: The placement process is designed to be fair and transparent, with students being assigned to schools based on their performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The placement will consider students’ raw scores, subject performance, and the number of Grade 1s.
  • Verification Window: To minimize errors, the GES has introduced a special review window from September 1 to September 8, 2025. During this period, candidates can log into the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) portal at www.cssps.gov.gh to verify their personal details, school codes, and program choices. This step is crucial to ensure accuracy before the final placement.
  • Checking Your Placement: The placement results will be officially released on September 17, 2025. You can check your placement online for free by visiting the CSSPS portal and entering your 10-digit BECE index number followed by the last two digits of the year you completed the exam.
  • Inclusion of Private Schools: For the first time, 25 private Senior High Schools have been included in the CSSPS under the Free SHS policy as part of a pilot program. This move aims to increase access to quality secondary education, especially in areas where public schools are oversubscribed.
  • No Vouchers: The Ministry of Education has waived the requirement for students to purchase vouchers to check their placement, making the process more accessible for all candidates.
  • Reporting to School: Students who secure a placement are expected to report to their respective schools between October 18 and October 20, 2025.

What to Do After Placement is Released

  1. Check Your Placement: Log in to the CSSPS portal to see your assigned school, program, and residential status.
  2. Self-Placement: If you are not automatically placed, you will be directed to a self-placement portal where you can choose a school from a list of institutions with available vacancies.
  3. Print Documents: Print your placement form, enrollment form, and prospectus from the portal. These documents are mandatory for admission.
  4. Finalize Admission: Report to the assigned school with the required documents within the specified dates to complete your enrollment.

What is the new SHS/TVET placement policy?
The new policy is merit-based placement, meaning admission will depend solely on BECE performance.

When does this policy take effect?
The policy takes effect with the 2025 SHS/TVET placement cycle.

Can students still do self-placement?
Yes. Students who are not automatically placed can still use the CSSPS self-placement option.
