Category C SHS in Ghana are senior high schools in Ghana that are typically considered to have lower admissions aggregates compared to Categories A and B. They are also often referred to as “less endowed” schools, but this doesn’t mean they’re not good schools. Many Category C schools provide excellent education and have produced high-achieving students.
There are no official fixed cut-off points for SHS placement. GES says placement is based on raw BECE scores, the competitiveness of the programme/school, vacancies, and choices—not a universal “cut-off.” 2025 school selection guidelines let candidates choose 1 school from Category A, up to 2 from Category B, and up to all 5 from Category C (plus the extra choices specified by GES for 2025). GES has reiterated in 2025 that “cut-off points” circulating on social media are misleading. Placement is determined by the CSSPS algorithm using your raw scores, your selected programme, vacancies, boarding/day preference, and competition for that school.
